How we check

Every project is checked by hand against at least two public sources — company newsrooms, regulators, trade press. No commercial databases.

Each card shows its sources and the date we checked them (every project in this set: on or after 2026-10-08). We re-check every month; a project that finishes or is cancelled leaves the tour.

Companies appear as sourced project facts only. Reported risks are shown as reported. The discipline lists are our own inference and say so. The small dots are other projects from public datasets — context, not checked by us.

    Why we watch it

A $20bn+ LNG project restarting at scale after a five-year security-driven suspension — a live test of how fast a paused megaproject can remobilise thousands of workers, and a rare African entry among 2026-2029 LNG builds. TotalEnergies said in September 2026 it could speed up a Phase 2 by keeping construction teams at Afungi.

    Phase in full, as reported

construction (almost 45% complete as of July 2026; about 10,000 people on site by late September 2026)

Reported risk in full, as reported

Construction is operating in "containment mode" due to ongoing insurgency-related security concerns in Cabo Delgado; incremental costs from the suspension are reported at roughly $4.5 billion, pushing total investment above the original $20 billion. Equipment built in Middle East yards was held up by the 2026 regional conflict; TotalEnergies said in July 2026 that this had been resolved.

Who builds it as stated by the sources

Operator / developerTotalEnergies (operator of the Mozambique LNG consortium)

    • TotalEnergiesoperator, restarted project January 2026
    • McDermott / Saipem / Chiyoda (EPC JV)onshore LNG plant EPC consortium (contract predates the 2021 force-majeure suspension; consortium composition per trade press, not re-confirmed by a primary 2026 source in this check)

    7 November 2025
    Full restart announced

    Disciplines likely needed our inference

    • construction management
    • piping/mechanical
    • HSE (security-sensitive site)
    • planning/project controls
